Our research aims at studying and treating pediatric and adult liver diseases by the means of cellular therapy and tissue engineering. We address severe liver conditions such as liver failure, cirrhosis and congenital and metabolic liver diseases for which no treatments other than liver transplantation exists. We start from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) to build organoids and tissues that are used as in vitro models to understand the pathophysiology and discover new potential therapies.
Thanks to the integration with cutting-edge biomaterials, we build three-dimensional bio-artificial organs for autologous replacement therapy or allogeneic regenerative medicine (but without the need of immunosuppression). The first of these treatments is currently moving towards a first-in-human clinical trial.
